Texture of "Yeo Baek"
For ten years, I have been expressing through sculptures and shadows.
My effort to unveil inner mind and subconsciousness lead to sculptures with shadows which differ from its original sculpture. And now, I am scrutinizing keenly into the 'Yeo Baek" , meaning hollow or negative space in Korean.
The reason I use shadows and "Yeo Baek" as my major tool is because I seek nonmaterial values. What's precious in this world always exists around us but does not show itself easily. Also, what's crucial in life does not exist in the form of material. This long belief of mine lead me to carve nonmaterials into shadows, and further into the "Yeo Baek"
I have chosen shadows and "Yeo Baek" as the heroin of my works, unlike the other usual sculptures, which shows its existence in solid material. This was my effort to look in a different perspective, away from the conventional disciplin or norms.
Time is nothing when we are beings of light and spirit.
But in the material world I live in, time flows like the river. I do not when my time will end, but I do know that I have passed the summer of my life. My health is falling and my wrinkles are deepening. So I reflect myself in hope to see if my inner soul is also deepening.
Now, I contemplate the meaning of my birth, the day of my death. Am I living today as if it is the last day of my life?
I can only be grateful to find out that I am only a fragile human giving myself up to fatigue and laziness.
Am I just floating in the river of life?
Do I have will and power to swim in that river?
Do I even know the right direction?
Am I just chasing vain glory, devoting myself for meaningless values?
Or am I seeking truth, love, freedom and marvel of life, in persue of meaningful experience and creativity.
More than hundred times a day I try to comfort myself and see if I am living righteously.
Now facing fall cycle of my life, I am looking into the blank space carefully.
Here stands a pillar. The pillar is hard to describe. It may seem like a grotesque tree or a fine ceramic. However when we change our familiar pattern of bias and see the "Yeo Baek" the pillar is making, we can find a person's life portrayed in the pillar.
From baby to a child, child to a girl, a girl to a elderly woman. When we slowly walk around the pillar and look carefully into it's silhouette, we can witness a woman's changing life.
We come to this world from nothing, and in the end, we will return to nothing.
We struggle to live meaningfully, but the trace we leave in this world might be grotesque or elaborate.
If you get used to looking at "Yeo Baek", you will feel two person facing each other. However, it is actually one person in different lifespan. The image of birth and growth, death and disappearing will be spoken to you through shadows.
